FXCollaborative 2020: A Year in Review

FXCollaborative
This holiday season, we are reaching beyond boundaries to wish everyone health and happiness. Cheers to a brighter 2021!

This year has been challenging for all of us, but it wasn't without some big highlights. From all of us at FXCollaborative, we want to thank our colleagues, clients, consultants, vendors, and friends as we celebrate the positive in 2020, learn from its lessons, and look forward to 2021.

During these challenging times, we have made a cognizant effort to give back to the community, to address the hardships and inequities that exist, and to support the underrepresented. We raised $8,970 for Covenant House and over $2,200 for Nontraditional Employment for Women (NEW). We issued statements in support of diversity, equity, and Black Lives Matter, and celebrated the NYC Women's March, Pride Month, Juneteenth, and National Hispanic Month. We also translated our collaborative spirit into the virtual environment with our "new normal" of work from home, participated in Daylight Hour, and gave our kudos to Mark Strauss, who retired and transitioned to Senior Principal Emeritus.

In 2020, we enjoyed participating in a range of conferences and virtual events including the SCUP North Atlantic Regional Conference, North American Passive House Conference, CTBUH "The Post-Crisis City" Conference, BuildingEnergy NYC Conference, PlanScapeArch Conference, AIA International Region "Catalyzing Change" Conference, Zak Virtual Festival of Façades, Open House New York Weekend, and the National Building Museum Spotlight on Design series; webinars with AIA New York, AIA Connecticut, Bisnow, Contract Magazine, CREW, IIDA, Parade.Build, and Metropolis; podcasts Her Rules Radio, Imagine a Place, and Constructed Futures; as well as continuing our outreach and recruiting efforts by attending career fairs and holding virtual portfolio workshops and reviews.

Our projects, opinions, and stories have been published in publications including Architectural Record, Architect's Newspaper, Forbes, the New York Post, NAD NOW, Architect's Newspaper, Construction Executive, and The Zweig Letter.

Our firm was rankedin Engineering News-Record's Top Design Firms, the Crain's New York Architects List, Building Design+Construction's Top Architecture Firms, and Interior Design Rising Giants. Many of our employees were recognized for their contributions to the industry—including Gavet Douangvichit as the ABNY Young Professional of July; Austin Sakong, Sara Ngan, and Wendi Shafran in the Beyond the Built Environment's Great Designers Library; Erica Alonzo as a Commercial Observer 2020 Top Young Professional, and Sara Ngan as one of Professional Women in Construction's 40 Under 40 Outstanding Women in Construction.

Project milestones in 2020 include LEED Gold certification for three projects: Proto Kendall Square, The Greenwich Lane, and the Statue of Liberty Museum (which also celebrated its first anniversary). 185 Broadway and Covenant House New York topped out construction. The Children's Museum of Manhattan and 130 St. Felix received approval by the Landmarks Preservation Commission.

Our projects were honored with notable design and industry awards including the AIA New York State Design Award of Merit (Pace University Student Landscape), Building Design+Construction Building Team Award (Statue of Liberty Museum), Chicago Athenaeum International Architecture Award (Statue of Liberty Museum), NJBIA New Good Neighbor Award (Interprofessional Health Sciences Campus), and NYCxDesign Award for NYC's Shining Moment (Statue of Liberty Museum).
