Tomorrow and every Juneteenth moving forward, we are closing our office to recognize this important date in history. We are committed to celebrating diversity and being anti-racist, and to designing a better world by shining a light on hidden stories and investing in a new culture that acknowledges our deeply interconnected society.
Juneteenth, also known as Jubilee Day or Emancipation Day, is celebrated every June 19 to commemorate the end of slavery in the United States. At the end of the Civil War, the Emancipation Proclamation formally freed enslaved African-Americans on January 1, 1863. However, it wasn't until June 19, 1865, that federal orders were read in Texas—the last in the Confederacy—declaring "all slaves are free."
