Happy birthday to the Statue of Liberty Museum! It was one year ago, on May 16, 2019, that the Statue of Liberty Museum first opened its doors to the public. To celebrate the milestone, members of the FXCollaborative design team share their reflections.
"During the years it took to design and build, many, many people pridefully joined with us to help realize our vision for this museum. And while I'm very proud of the building's design, I'm prouder still of seeing it bring happiness and joy to so many, and helping to inspire her monumental dream for all who visit."—Nicholas Garrison, FXCollaborative Partner and Design Director
"The museum will last for generations, and provides new experiences for people to honor the statue and what she stands for. The project was not without challenges. From raising it up for flood resiliency, to realizing the faceted roof, it was a massive team effort that I am very proud to be a part of."—Brandon Massey, FXCollaborative Senior Associate; Project Architect
"Standing on the Island, beneath the Statue of Liberty, you feel at once removed, somewhere kind of separate and sacred. And yet, you feel connected to the world ... I'm honored to have been able to add to this revered place."—Cameron Ringness, FXCollaborative Associate; Project Designer
"The thing that resonated the most with me was the depth of material exploration that we undertook. Our goal was to always find a material palette that would age as gracefully as the Statue herself."—Jim Bushong, FXCollaborative Senior Associate; Enclosure Specialist
"As a LEED Gold building, the museum was built with a keen awareness of best practices for sustainability, and an awareness of the surrounding ecology. ... It was a once in a lifetime opportunity to work on such an amazing project, and amazing site."—Daniel Piselli, FXCollaborative Senior Associate, Director of Sustainability; Project Manager
