Keep it simple. Learn Generously. Work to a code.
Carsten is a zoning and pre-design architect at FXCollaborative working to synthesize and organize zoning and site information in the early stages of projects to inform decisions around form, size, and strategy. He creates graphics, drawings, and maps that communicate these details to clients, stakeholders, and project teams. Carsten is well-versed in digital tools, including three-dimensional modeling, GIS, and data analysis, which support this process.

Originally from the Pacific Northwest, Carsten's design sensibility is informed by a deep respect for nature and an affinity for pragmatic, simple solutions. Growing up as a musician sparked a search for a collaborative career where the strengths of a diverse team add up to more than the sum of their parts and where there is always something new to learn.

Looking to the future of the industry, Carsten hopes that digital design tools will receive more attention for their ability to help designers visualize and understand social and environmental context as they adapt our buildings and cities in the face of constant change. Carsten teaches GIS and spatial data analysis classes at various architecture schools in the NYC area, most recently at City College of New York's Spitzer School of Architecture and the New Jersey Institute of Technology.
