Community Garden Master Plan for AIANY 2020 Day of Service

FXCollaborative
For the third year, FXCollaborative has participated in the AIA New York Day of Service.

FXCollaborative, assisted by NBBJ, created a Master Plan for the Woodbine Street Block Association Garden located in Bushwick, Brooklyn. Working in close collaboration with the gardeners, the team held interactive virtual workshops and meetings to tailor the garden's layout, style, materials, and proportions of individual components to their needs. The master plan serves as a blueprint for a range of individual projects including new planters, seating, and outdoor kitchen, which the garden can complete in the future on their own or with volunteer assistance. These upgrades will ensure the longevity of the garden for the community it serves, and help the garden realize a strong vision while providing opportunities for future collaboration.

From Sean Michael-Fleming, WSBA community gardener:
"Woodbine Street Block Association & Garden is extremely thankful to AIA and especially to FXCollaborative and NBBJ for their generosity, hard work, flexibility, and creativity. We are excited to have a co-created plan that will make this historic community garden safer and more user-friendly to our members, and also more stylish and conductive to the festive celebrations and cultural events we are known for (and expect to see you all at). Thank you!"

Due to COVID-19, the team offered pro bono design services to the Woodbine Street Block Association Garden, and intends to volunteer on site with Rebuilding Together NYC to implement aspects of the master plan once safe to do so.

AIA New York's annual Day of Service is an opportunity for architects and their firms to bring ideas to life for nonprofit organizations around the city. Launched in 2018 when the AIA Conference on Architecture took place in New York City, the program offers a framework for groups of volunteers to help non-profit organizations with much-needed upgrades to their facilities or assistance with their mission.

A webinar featuring all AIANY 2020 Day of Service projects was held September 15.
