Through programming and planning options, and a framework for implementation, the master plan will allow the historic urban campus to meet its aspirations for growth.
Space is at a premium on Barnard College's tight urban campus, yet the institution's intellectual aspirations continue to grow. The administration of the historic women's college has envisioned growth in research opportunities and faculty expansion. Tasked with meeting this goal, a new campus master plan by FXCollaborative answers the question of how to reconfigure and increase utilization of existing spaces in order to facilitate the desired transformation. The master plan is motivated by a series of guiding principles. It supports Barnard's academic mission by providing additional space for programs and academic centers; enhances academic support spaces; co-locates faculty and provides additional offices for future faculty; and maximizes the use of space on campus for academic use. It also recommends a series of renovations to meet deferred maintenance needs and current regulatory requirements.
