Zazu is an architectural and urban designer at FXCollaborative who focuses on the narrative and concept phases of a wide range of projects. As a “Jack of all trades, master of none,” Zazu nimbly tackles a variety of tasks and project types and has taken on everything from large scale master plans, public approval processes, cultural institution and museum renovations to residential interior design. Zazu is a visual storyteller, aesthetic spatial planner and analytical thinker, who thrives in communicating abstract and conceptual ideas to clients and stakeholders.
A native New Yorker, Zazu was inspired by the unique conditions of NYCHA Housing to enter the building and design industry. She studied art history with a focus on architectural theory and its questionable moral impact on both local communities and mass globalization; they remain fascinated by how the built environment, cultural images and objects can provide insight into human actions and desires throughout time. Zazu went on to study at University of Virginia's School of Architecture, where she wrote a thesis on the ways in which various political ideologies directly influence urban and architectural methodologies and design. Zazu is hopeful that the industry will soon see a “wildness” revolution that pushes building further toward balanced ecologies, the integration of native vegetation, and diverse and bizarre aesthetics.
Zazu is a surrealist artist who utilizes a pseudo-psychological system to depict reimagined spaces. Most recently, her work was selected as part of NYC Department of Cultural Affairs’ City Canvas program, a gallery of eight preapproved designs that can be installed on construction fencing, netting, and sidewalk sheds across the city.
