Josh Silber – Havana: Faded Glory

FXCollaborative
Fin de Siglo
Havana: Faded Glory, an exhibition featuring photography by Josh Silber, is on view in the FXCollaborative Gallery from January 14 through February 18, 2019. Taken over a three-year period on multiple trips to Cuba (2015-2017), the photographs capture the beauty and decay of many of Havana's small and major buildings, vintage signage in and around the city, and classic American cars that are ubiquitous on the island.

Join us for the opening reception of Havana: Faded Glory on Thursday, January 17, from 6:00-8:30 PM.

"I fell in love with Cuba long before I had the opportunity to travel there. In the early '90s I lived near Miami's 'Little Havana' while I attended law school at the University of Miami. I was quickly fascinated and drawn to the many local coffee counters and sandwich shops which opened my mind to the Cuban culture. Traveling to Cuba legally was not easily accomplished, but it remained on my bucket list until 2015.

La Guarida Rooftop
"What started with a mysterious chartered flight on an Eastern Airlines branded plane quickly became the trip of a lifetime and the beginning of a series of five trips to Cuba between 2015 and 2017 (a sixth trip is planned for April 2019). Even after President Obama's game-changing visit, the Rolling Stones: Havana Moon concert, and daily JetBlue flights that started in 2016, traveling to Cuba is still very difficult.

Soviet Embassy
"When I arrived in Havana on my first trip in 2015, it felt like I had traveled back in time. The architectural styles vary from colonial to mid-century modern to Brutalist architecture erected during the Soviet era. During its heyday, Havana was a resort city rivaling Miami Beach or Las Vegas, and an important commercial hub between the Americas.

"With the lack of commercial development following the Cuban Revolution in 1959, much of the whimsical modern architecture survives, although often neglected or in ruins. What you can't see in the photographs is the warmth of the people, the music that fills every street, the delicious food, or that feeling of pure wonder that takes over when you arrive in Havana. Some of the glory may have faded, but optimism fills the air."
