Founded by George Balanchine and Lincoln Kirstein, the School of American Ballet (SAB) is the official school of the New York City Ballet, training the majority of the NYCB's new dancers. The School of American Ballet, recognized as the pre-eminent ballet academy in the United States, is located within the Samuel B. And David Rose Building at The Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts complex in New York City. The renovation project includes the main administrative and studio fifth floor, a small open office area on the fourth floor, and four dormitory floors. A primary focus of the renovation is to respond to a "billowing" of public use within the main areas of the School. These areas, primarily the entry lobby and corridors in front of the studios and locker rooms, must flex to accommodate a large influx of students before and after classes. The renovation seeks to provide SAB with facilities that appropriately reflect the stature of the School as well as create a flexible and engaging environment for its students, administrative staff, faculty, donors and general public.
