Recognized as the pre-eminent ballet academy in the United States, the School of American Ballet is a long-standing constituent of Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, based on the classical foundations set forth by founders George Balanchine and Lincoln Kirstein. The school's renovation embodies its stature and ideals through bright, warm spaces that are inviting to its young students.
The renovation included the main administrative offices and studio fifth floor, a small open office area on the fourth floor, and four dormitory floors. Public spaces were designed to flex to accommodate a large influx of students before and after classes to respond to a "billowing" of use within the entry lobby and corridors. The design laces together disparate areas through vibrant color and new glass "prosceniums," which provide views into each of the studios, activating the corridors and strengthening connections between the students, faculty, administration and the public.
