Public Square is featured in
The Road Ahead: Reimagining Mobility at the
Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum, an exhibition of over 40 design projects highlighting the technologies that will change how we move people, goods, and services in the future. Autonomous vehicles are quickly becoming a reality, and our Public Square system offers a compelling tactic for New York City to adapt to driverless cars by transforming something the city already controls: its streets.
Public Square, Model Detail
Driverless cars and increased car sharing will likely result in less on-street parking, opening up opportunities for reclaimed pedestrian space. Public Square is a plug-and-play system of interlocking, unitized squares that provides a platform for a wide variety of treatments and uses. With applications ranging from seating to retail stands, to play equipment, gardens, and green space, Public Square can be assembled into endless configurations to suit the needs of different neighborhoods. Crucially, it can promote a steady evolution of streetscapes as cities adapt to autonomous vehicles. The system allows for easy access to utilities, works with existing drainage paths, increases stormwater retention, provides bio-filtration, and can be embedded with smart-street technology.
The Road Ahead: Reimagining Mobility is on view until Sunday, March 31, 2019. For more information, including accompanying educational programs, visit
