Jenny Sabin: Matter Design Computation

FXCollaborative
In celebration of Women's History Month, the Women of FXFOWLE hosted "Matter Design Computation," a presentation by Jenny Sabin, Principal of Jenny Sabin Studio and Director of Sabin Design Lab at Cornell University.

Jenny Sabin's research explores how the intersection and dialogue between art and science can push innovation and the frontiers in architecture. Drawing from collaborations with scientists and engineers, and deeply rooted in the process of making, Sabin's projects investigate the potential of adaptive materials, adaptive structures, and adaptive environments. "I'm happiest as a maker," Sabin explained. "I'm obsessed with making and the shift in our discipline through the advent of digital fabrication machines." Her work involves several material inquiries, including digital ceramics, digital knitting, computation, and biosynthesis.

Much of the discussion during Sabin's "Matter Design Computation" presenation focused on the role of collaboration in her work and the way her research will move forward. When asked what 'big' things she looks for in order to produce a successful collaboration, Sabin responded, "Playfulness, patience, and curiosity," and described how architecture poses questions that create productive tension in her collaborations, including those of scale, fabrication, and inhabitation.

Jenny Sabin Studio won this year's MoMA PS1 Young Architects Program, and their project Lumen will be on view in the museum's courtyard this summer beginning June 29. The installation will advance ideas of digital fabrication, sustainability, and material understanding, just as Sabin's work will continue to spark discussions at FXFOWLE about the role of design research, making, and explorations.

Sabin's presentation was part of a month-long series of firm wide events and programs that focused on how design research is integrated into all of FXFOWLE's projects, and explored opportunities for research thinking further influences the firm's work and vision.

The Women of FXFOWLE's mission is to support professional growth and leadership development for women.
