As the district has developed around the tower, it remains both congruous to its surroundings, and a star in its own right.
As one of the first new buildings constructed in Shanghai's Pudong District, creating a regional headquarters for one of China's biggest banks posed a challenge: how can the building relate to its site, without knowing what that site would be? Our solution was to design a structure that can be a standalone jewel in any context. The striking, 29-story tower is comprised of two slabs—one clad in a glass curtain, perforated with stainless steel brise soleil; the other a solid core wrapped in white stone, with punched fenestration. The roof curves downward in a reference to historic Chinese architecture, while a seven-story mass at the tower's base houses a public banking hall, meeting rooms, vault space and a stock processing center.
