Historically, ferry terminals have served as waterfront gateways to cities, and Glen Cove is no exception. After designing a revitalization plan for the city, FXCollaborative was commissioned to lead the design of the terminal as a central component in the plan and a key node in a new public water-transit system connecting Long Island directly to New York City and Connecticut. The new terminal's arched plan and glass curtain wall instill a sense of journey from the entrance and guide the flow of circulation along the building's radial structural system. The facility bridges covered grade parking and as the site narrows, it merges pedestrian, vehicular, and recreational traffic, successfully activating the waterfront.
