With expanded capabilities, the center serves as a beacon of well-being for patients and their families, as well as the larger city of Buffalo.
We designed the 11-story, 142,000-square-foot Scott Bieler Clinical Sciences Center for the Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center, one of the nation's foremost cancer treatment centers. In addressing the programmatic needs of ambulatory care and offices for researchers, the new center meets growing demand, expands patient-care programs, and provides dedicated space to clinical programs and support services. The building occupies a pivotal gateway site on campus and connects to the main hospital, wrapping around a prominent corner and cantilevering over an existing research facility to form an inter-connected, three-dimensional composition.

Divided into two volumes, the design responds to both programmatic needs and solar orientation. A long, serrated bar contains research offices and clinical functions. The building's façade is punctuated by a three-story volume housing treatment rooms and a reception area. The cantilevered volume is shaded by terracotta fins that reduce direct sunlight and glare. High ceilings, scenic views, and natural light create a premier work environment for cutting-edge medical research and a comforting environment for patients and visitors.
