Located on New Town Creek at the East River, this school is an anchor of the community, and a catalyst to connect Hunter's Point South Park with the natural environment and to the City beyond.
Located on a previously-undeveloped parcel of the Hunter's Point South Phase 2 Development in Queens, the new Hunter's Point South Primary School accommodates 612 students, grades Pre-K through 5. The school program includes classrooms, a library, a cafeteria, a gymatorium, and administrative spaces. The 80,000-square-foot school building occupies half the site, with an 18,000 SF play yard on the remaining area. The school complies with the requirements of the New York City Green Schools Guide.

FXCollaborative's design creates two distinct precincts within the building; a four story academic bar, and a three story assembly structure. Located on a peninsula between the East River and Newtown Creek, the school sits on the western edge of the site, maximizing views toward the river and Manhattan beyond. The play yard to the east connects the school to the surrounding residential neighborhood. Classrooms, circulation, and assembly spaces have access to natural daylight. The welcoming lobby cuts diagonally through the ground floor, linking the river edge park to the west with the school play yard to the east. The sun will modulate the façade's textured palette of Iron spot brick and metallic panels from morning to afternoon.
