Led by FXCollaborative, the design transforms Penn Station from a cramped, congested, and unwelcoming environment into a bold civic beacon for travel and transportation. Today's station serves nearly three times the passenger volume it did in the 1960s, yet remains constrained by outdated infrastructure, worn finishes, and a legacy structural framework that limits capacity and clarity. Despite incremental improvements over decades, the station no longer meets the needs or expectations of the region it serves.
Our design establishes a comprehensive, future-ready foundation for reinvestment, enabling Penn Station to expand operations, modernize infrastructure, enhance safety and passenger flow, grow revenue opportunities, and deliver a vastly improved user experience. It reduces overcrowding, unifies station operations, improves security, and integrates Penn Station with Moynihan Train Hall and potential future expansion.
In June 2023, the project received the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul, the MTA, Amtrak, and NJ Transit, affirming confidence in the vision and in FXCollaborative's continued leadership of the architectural team. With the addition of globally respected and locally rooted collaborators, John McAslan + Partners and Studio 397, the team brings together international design excellence and deep regional insight.
Building on the Master Plan developed by FXCollaborative, this expanded design partnership is uniquely positioned to deliver a transformational, world class Penn Station, creating an iconic civic gateway worthy of its role as North America's busiest passenger rail station and serving the daily needs of 600,000 passengers with clarity, dignity, and inspiration.
