The new central concourse in one of the world's busiest train stations will provide a dynamic new space for NJ Transit's operations that enhances the passenger experience.
To reprogram and rejuvenate NJ Transit's operations in New York Penn Station, FXCollaborative in collaboration with WSP designed a new Central Concourse that improves passenger circulation, creates a central focal point for the entire complex, and introduces a palette of materials that are both clearly legible and stylistically timeless. Working closely with the station's major stakeholders (NJ Transit, Amtrak, and the Long Island Rail Road), we conducted a thorough analysis of the station, developed a viable design for the new Central Concourse, and are seeing the project through to final design and construction.

In 2011, FXCollaborative and WSP began a Visioning Study that investigated ways to improve the transit system's Penn Station operations by increasing passenger capacity, improving circulation, and enhancing the passenger experience. Three potential modifications were identified, with the most impactful serving as basis for the subsequent 10% Design Report, in which a detailed set of design documents was developed. Following the success of our Visioning Study and 10% Design Report, the FXCollaborative and WSP team is continuing the design of the Central Concourse through final design and construction administration.
