In Dubai's new Jubal Ali district—a resort-like outcropping of bustling new residential, commercial and office space—The Bonyan hotel and residences had to blend in aesthetically, while optimizing both interior and exterior spaces for the intense Gulf sun.
FXCollaborative designed a 20-story structure of stacked slabs, strikingly curved and strategically placed to allow light to penetrate open areas. Careful analysis of the site's solar form and climate trends allowed the building's organic massings to sit at the ideal positions to minimize harsh light for residents and guests throughout the day, while creating a varied, dynamic shadow cover outside.
