FXCollaborative and Starr Whitehouse Landscape Architects were retained by the Alliance for Downtown New York to conduct a study of Water Street and propose a design for the street's future. The first phase of this study was dedicated to research and analysis. The team conducted field surveys and inventories documenting all streetscape elements, building plans, city regulations, and climate conditions. During this research and analysis phase, the team also held meetings with key stakeholders to confirm the goals and a vision for the Street. In Phase 2, the Starr Whitehouse/FXCollaborative team facilitated a series of interactive themed participant workshops. These sessions established a set of principles, alternative programs, and concept visions. The workshops addressed program, branding, economics, and transportation, and, ultimately, streetscape design. Currently the team is working on the final vision plan and implementation plan to recommend actions for both short-term and long-term goals.
