Integral to its community, the new fitness center is designed to promote both healthy living and social responsibility.
Located within the La Central mixed-income, mixed-use development in the Bronx, NY, the new YMCA building provides an anchor for the entire community. The ample ground floor storefront affording views into the wellness center puts the YMCA's mission on display. Brightly-colored ribbon-like walls guide members and visitors from the street through the facility—from reception down a wide, sky-lit stair, and culminating at two naturally light-filled swimming pools. The design incorporates abundant areas for casual interaction and opportunities to watch a variety of activities within each space—community rooms, a child watch center, a gymnasium, and a natatorium. Movable walls in the studio spaces provide flexibility to accommodate varying group sizes or multiple activities simultaneously, and facilitate future changes in programs and usage.

The Y is an association of men and women committed to promoting healthy living, nurturing youth development, and fostering a sense of social responsibility. The organization strives to ensure that everyone, regardless of age, income, or background, has the opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive.
