The design was a rigorous examination of fit and function, sculpting and organizing the spaces to maximize the functionality of teaching and gathering spaces.
The completion of the Arnhold Hall Cultural Center marked the final stage in the conversion of a 19th-century former department store to academic use as part of The New School's urban campus. Occupying the building's first, mezzanine, and second floors, the Center provides a new venue for academic and performing arts events for the school's diverse student population. A site-specific artwork by Sol LeWitt stretches throughout the interior, and accents of light guide visitors up a distinctive new staircase and through flexible, multi-purpose spaces that accommodate meetings, dinners, performances, and exhibitions.
