The developer of a newly renovated office building wanted to transform their building's roof into a communal amenity to woo prospective tenants—but the roof lacked the structural integrity and egress capacity to handle a heavy program. We designed a creative solution for the retrofit: fill the majority of the roof area with attractive, unoccupied green space to elegantly manage the limited capacity. Set back from the perimeter to allow for circulation, the green roof is carpeted with shallow rooted sedums and succulents at the periphery, and deeper at the center, with trees, tall grasses and perennials. A wood trellis made of locally-sourced black locust provides shelter and an intimate sense of scale for guests, while actively managed seasonal planters offer a dynamic color-changing visual story.
