Once blighted by sunken rail cuts, Manhattan's West Side has recently experienced a revival. Contributing to this new sense of vibrancy is the Avalon Clinton Mixed-Use Development, which infuses the neighborhood with 630 residential units and retail space and provides homes for three nonprofit theater groups. The program spans three new buildings that frame an urban garden and plaza, which is connected to surrounding streets by through-block arcades. The buildings' material palette includes masonry and glass, both contextual and locally-sourced materials with a high thermal coefficient that contributes to strict energy efficiency goals set forth for the project.
