Alice Tully Hall

Reimagining Alice Tully Hall posed a seemingly simple, but strikingly delicate challenge: how to open up a heavy, Brutalist building to the world around it?
As part of our larger redesign of the Julliard School, we collaborated with Diller Scofidio + Renfro to re-envision one of the most utilized yet under-recognized venues in Lincoln Center, both aesthetically and functionally. The goal of the design was two-fold: to re-engage the dynamic public realm of New York City, and to create a dramatic, state-of-the-art performance space.

We transformed the 1,100 seat venue from a good multi-purpose hall into a premiere chamber music venue with street identity and upgraded functionality for all performance needs. Tucked under the Juilliard School, the opaque base of Pietro Belluschi's building is stripped away to reveal the hall to the street. The sloped underside of Juilliard's expansion serves as the canopy framing the redesigned hall, its expanded lobby and box office. A shear one-way cable net glass façade puts the new Tully Hall on display and introduces a new public space, both interior and exterior.
