Crain's New York Business asked a select group of design firms to think big: what single infrastructure project could transform New York City, and address some of the issues related to overcrowding as the city's population approaches nine million? Our proposed solution is The Halo Line: a 57-mile loop of 29 stops. With 83% of new residents expected to settle in the Bronx, Brooklyn, and Queens over the next 25 years, The Halo Line links these growing housing clusters to job opportunities; provides new routes to LaGuardia Airport, Hunts Point Market, and other hubs; and helps spur economic development in forgotten neighborhoods. The lightweight aerial tram is designed to float above existing streets and railway right-of-ways, run along existing infrastructure routes, minimize physical footprint and interference with existing traffic patterns, maximize user convenience, and remain operable even in the event of widespread flooding.
