The design vision marries sustainable housing, vibrant community spaces, and an active urban grid.
La Central is a model of equitable development. It transforms an abused and vacant lot in the South Bronx into a vibrant and verdant district, uplifting an underserved community. At its core, La Central delivers subsidized homes for over 2,000 rent-burdened New Yorkers in four buildings. In addition, a 160-unit facility provides units for homeless adults with special needs and chronically homeless individuals. Complementing the residential component, a new YMCA offers a state-of-the art wellness facility for the community, including a large natatorium. Rounding out the program is the street-facing BronxNet television studio, community-oriented retail, a future community garden, and an observatory atop the highest building for a nearby high school.

The design vision marries sustainable housing, vibrant community spaces, and an active urban grid. The project's five buildings are organized around a major open space that will provide a diversity of environments connected to the larger context. Sustainability, resiliency, and active design principles are fully integrated into the development. A combination of on-site cogeneration, extensive use of photovoltaic panels, and a super-tight building envelope will provide a sustainable environment for residents. Buildings are organized around a central verdant open space and green roofs cover 50% of the roof areas. The five buildings relate to the character of the Bronx neighborhood, creating an identity and sense of place that represent La Central's mission of providing homes and fostering community.
