Large urban centers are now experiencing the consequences of climate change, and are facing colossal social and economic impacts. As buildings that house thousands of people, urban skyscrapers possess a distinct role to play in the face of climate change events. Current design methodologies can be modified to better respond to the outcomes of extreme weather events, such as sea level rise, intense storms, high winds, abnormal precipitation, and extended periods of heat and cold. This paper explores how to reframe programmatic, architectural, structural and mechanical approaches to skyscraper design. In addition, the question of how an urban skyscraper can go beyond protecting itself and its occupants to serve as a refuge and resource to the surrounding community is discussed.
