Recent changes in the financial landscape, technology and workforce have greatly contributed to the evolution of today's workplace, changing the very nature and definition of work. The ability to work anywhere has triggered a new emphasis on working somewhere For this reason, place-making and the unique experience associated with a particular place, that reinforces the way you work has gained a new level of importance to companies that want to maximize economic efficiency and maintain/recruit top-tier talent. Many of these corporations are highlighting those qualities inherent to their location and brand. Workplace amenities, once considered qualitative programs, are now beginning to show quantitative results through recent advances in data-gathering technology that can show important patterns that illustrate how people work.
Until now, the office has been a micro-environment within the urban (macro) environment, often using urban terminology such as "neighborhoods" and "streets" to describe the layout of the office floor. But with clients' interest in real estate efficiency and workforce effectiveness, workplace amenities are no longer confined to the office environment: Today's work (both noun and verb) blurs the distinction between the office and its surroundings. The focus of this research is to identify a burgeoning workplace typology, defined by the blending of the office place with its urban context. As workplaces gradually migrate from the office floor to the urban sphere, corporations gain the use of amenities such as fitness centers and food services without overhead costs. This research will investigate the reasons behind the emergence of this workplace typology and how it is impacting how we live and work. As an illustration of this trend, the paper will present a project-based example that proposes the use of mobile technology to promote this new hyper-connected workplace.
