Follow the Water

Water covers more than 71% of the Earth's surface, but less than 1% is fresh and suitable for human use. Water is the key to life and a critical element of healthy, vibrant communities. Sources of fresh water, such as rivers, streams, and aquifers, throughout the world are under stress partly due to pollution from stormwater runoff. Since a significant amount of water from rainfall lands on rooftops-especially in urban areas-green roofs can, and need to, play a greater role in future stormwater management strategies.
Focusing on the Javits Center's green roof, Follow the Water demonstrates how thoughtful design and implementation results in a significant contribution to sustainable water management. The addition of green infrastructure to the urban landscape in the form of green roofs helps protect a region's natural water supply and ensures a blue future for all.
