Attrazione Opposto, an exhibition of works by artists and married couple Phillia C. Yi and A. E. Ted Aub, marks their first New York exhibition and their first two-person exhibition devoted exclusively to their work together. Loosely translated as "Opposites Attract," the title reflects the tensions that run through both their lives and practices: female/male, East/West, abstract/representational, prints/sculpture—and, naturally, Venus/Mars. Rather than treating these differences as contradictions, the exhibition explores how opposition can generate energy, dialogue, and attraction.
Members of the Department of Art and Architecture at Hobart and William Smith Colleges since the 1980s, Yi and Aub divide their time between Geneva, New York, and Pietrasanta, Italy. Yi is known for large-scale woodcuts that combine painterly color, expressive surfaces, gesture, and layered carving and printing to create vibrant symbolic abstractions. Rooted in an exploration of cultural identity and memory, her work transforms the traditions of printmaking into a deeply personal visual language. Aub, by contrast, works primarily in sculpture, often beginning with the human figure and moving toward ambiguity, humor, and perceptual play. Influenced by folk art, Surrealism, and nineteenth-century "upside-down" images, his sculptures challenge assumptions about orientation, recognition, and meaning.
Seen together, Yi's expansive abstractions and Aub's enigmatic figurative sculptures appear radically different, yet share a fundamental interest in transformation, perception, tension, and the unexpected. Their work reveals how contrasting artistic languages can exist in continual conversation—distinct and independent, yet energized by the same creative exchange. Attrazione Opposto celebrates not simply the differences between them, but the unexpected possibilities those differences create.
