"What would our city be without parks, and what would our parks be without the efforts of NY4P to keep them vital and healthy?"
At the New Yorkers for Parks (NY4P) 2019 Party 4 Parks gala, FXCollaborative Founding Principal Emeritus Bruce Fowle, FAIA, LEED AP, was awarded the Corporate Champion 4 Sustainability Award, in recognition of his work promoting sustainability in New York City.
Bruce was presented the award by Alan Steel, President and CEO of the Javits Center. In his acceptance speech, Bruce acknowledged: "There are many people who deserve recognition for supporting my career-long efforts toward sustainability ... [including those] supporting my firm's efforts toward building the first green skyscraper 4 Times Square, and starting the green movement in high-density development. But in many respects, I'm even prouder of what our team was able to accomplish with the Javits Center."
At the Javits Center, Bruce and his team at FXCollaborative substantially reduced the building's energy consumption, and transformed the exhibition center from "what was then deemed to be the worst bird-killer in the city ... to be almost totally bird-proof while adding more vision glass and increasing transparency—all no-nos in the birding world. Then we turned the leaky old eyesore of a roof into a fifth façade—almost seven acres of green space that has become habitat for numerous bird species."

Bruce also made note of the event's two other honorees: Corey Johnson, Speaker of the New York City Council, and Signe Nielson, RLA, FASLA, Principal at
Mathews Nielsen Landscape Architects (MNLA). Speaking of Signe, Bruce mentioned his long appreciation and acquaintance with her, which began in 1982 with the organization they helped start—Architects, Designers, and Planners for Social Responsibility (ADPSR).
