Sylvia Smith is the recipient of the
Beverly Willis Architecture Foundation (BWAF)'s Pillar Award, which is presented to a woman who has shown leadership and mentorship in the profession, and who works to increase recognition of women's work and opportunities for women.
As Senior Partner, Sylvia formed and leads our award-winning Culture and Education Studio. Since joining the firm in 1982, she has been responsible for program-intensive projects of varying scope and size, approaching design as a practical and poetic articulation of theoretical ideas. Throughout her career, Sylvia has been dedicated to the advancement of women in the profession and the pursuit of excellence in design. She actively shares her knowledge and expertise with many industry, educational and arts organizations in New York City and the region.

In addition Sylvia, the BWAF is honoring other leaders who have made significant strides in changing the culture of the building industry to recognize women's work past and present and to promote more women into positions of leadership:
The Building Energy Exchange (Women in Sustainability and Energy (WISE), Ned Cramer (Editor-in-Chief,
Architect Magazine), Sabrina Kanner (Executive Vice President, Design & Construction, U.S. Office Division
Brookfield Properties), Frances Bronet (President,
Pratt Institute), and Zhanina Boyadzhieva and Juliet Chun (
Girl Uninterrupted).
Founded in 2002, the Beverly Willis Architecture Foundation (BWAF), is a nonprofit organization with the mission of advancing the knowledge and recognition of women's contributions to architecture.
