Hunter's Point Campus Alterview

Alterview, an installation by local artist Natasha Johns-Messenger was recently unveiled as part of the Hunter's Point Campus terrace. The installation was commissioned by the NYC Department of Cultural Affairs for its Perfect for Art program. The piece comprises a large sheet of colored glass, delivering a heightened perceptual shift through the use of complimentary color.
Commenting on the installation, Natasha Johns-Messenger said, "I see this work acting like a 'real-time' image capture related to photography and painting. My practice, to date, has produced site-determined spatial installations that activate an experience of perceptual paradox in the immediate environment. By employing a complex system of optical physics, i.e. strategically placed material devices, such as: periscopic mirrors, live-video projections, architectural mimicry and cuts and site-determined photography, the aim has been to set up disorienting pictorial planes in real space. Participant viewers, in most instances, do not know what is real and what is virtual in the immediate space or view. The general conceptual objectives and theoretical agenda underlying my installation works has been three-fold: one, to dissolve parameters between art-object and its context by using the site as subject; two, to change the way immediate space is perceived or viewed by developing modes of representation such as real-time image capture inside optical viewing structures; and three, to create artworks that are predominantly experiential (not object based)."
