FXOne Presents: Staying Out through LGBTQ Inclusive Senior Housing

FXCollaborative
As part of Pride Month, FXCollaborative hosted "Staying Out through LGBTQ Inclusive Senior Housing," a seminar featuring three industry professionals who discussed the design and importance of LGBTQ welcoming housing and the on-going need and growing demand that there is for it.

Coming out is hard enough the first time, let alone having to do it twice. Imagine being forced to live your older years in an environment in which you can no longer be you, having to rebuild the walls which you had spent so long trying to break down earlier on in life. It is that fear of being ostracized, rejected, and judged that so many LGBTQ seniors feel when needing to move into aged care. LGBTQ inclusive senior housing allows individuals to continue to be themselves, to be proud of who they are, to be out, and to stay out.

Panelists:
Latisha Millard-Bethea, Director of Resident Services, SAGE
Danielle Cerone, Associate, Marvel Architects
Dylan Salmons, Senior Developer, Pennrose

The seminar provided a platform for three industry professionals to speak about the individual roles which they are playing to make LGBTQ inclusive senior housing a reality and success for so many and how design is being addressed. As moderator, Martin Scott set the scene and introduced the panelists who represented the architect, the developer, and the LGBTQ senior community.

Latisha Millard-Bethea, Director of Resident Services of SAGE (Services & Advocacy Group for LGBTQ Elders), focused in particular on the issues of the LGBTQ elderly. Latisha introduced SAGE, which is America's oldest and largest non-profit organization dedicated to improving the lives of LGBTQ adults, and discussed its importance in the LGBTQ community, the role it plays within project development, and made reference to some of the many projects which she has been a part of.

Danielle Cerone from Marvel Architects is the Project Manager in charge of the design and construction of the Ingersoll Senior Residences, the first LGBTQ welcoming senior housing building in New York City that is expected to open in the fall of this year. Danielle discussed the project's environmental, economic, and social considerations, as well as the close working relationship they have had with SAGE throughout the entire process.

Also on the panel was Dylan Salmons, Senior Developer at Pennrose, who spoke about two LGBTQ inclusive senior housing projects which he has been a large part of: John C. Anderson Apartments in Philadelphia which was completed in 2014 and has paved the way for many new LGBTQ inclusive senior housing projects currently in the pipeline, and Haven Green in New York City which is currently moving through the final stages of the planning process.

The seminar concluded with a Q&A period where discussions flowed freely between the panelists and the audience, providing opportunity for an ongoing dialogue on issues that are still affecting the LGBTQ senior community today. Topics discussed included designing for the LGBTQ senior community, education to prevent discrimination and isolation, lessons learned from one of the country's first LGBTQ welcoming senior housing projects, and ways in which the current lack of housing is being addressed.

This seminar was sponsored by FXCollaborative and FXOne. FXOne was created as a forum to recognize and raise awareness of LGBTQ issues within the architecture and design industry. The group also provides outreach opportunities for the firm to volunteer with LGBTQ organizations in the city.
