We recently completed the
Zero Waste Challenge, an initiative hosted by
AIA New York, with support from
The Durst Organization. We were one of several AEC firms challenged to reduce our waste generation and increase our recycling.

Over a four-month period, we documented and bench-marked our current waste generation, created a firm-wide waste management plan, and performed five waste assessments. Throughout the entirety of the challenge, we shared all of the results with AIA New York and our firm.

Overall, we increased our diversion rate from 36% to 70%, and reduced our amount of waste by 29%.

AIA New York recognized our charrette and educational graphics as one of the "most innovative strategies to reduce waste" among the challenge participants.
Although we have a lot more work to do, the Zero Waste Challenge inspired us to reduce consumption and waste in our office further, and we are hoping to implement new initiatives in early 2019.
