Julian Olivas | Pairs: AK/NY

FXCollaborative
Currently on display at the FXFOWLE Gallery, Pairs: AK/NY features photography by Julian Olivas. The exhibition pairs aerial photographs of Alaska's open landscapes with photographs of New York's textures and built environment to question our understanding of landscape, form, and place.

Julian's adventures extend to the extreme ends of the United States from Manhattan Island to Umnak Island in Alaska's Aleutian Chain.

In New York, Julian is a pilot and a photographer, flying aerial tours, shooting urban landscapes, exploring an ever-evolving city from the air, and teaching aspiring pilots the art of flying helicopters in a complex mix.

In Umnak, he is a cowboy in a helicopter, herding feral cattle, reindeer, mustangs, and buffalo. He lives on a ranch in the shadow of an active volcano surrounded by massive migrations of wildlife that live along the Ring of Fire and Birthplace of Storms, that fissure where the Bering Sea and the North Pacific collide.

Pairs: AK/NY is on view in the FXFOWLE Gallery through January 26, 2018, 9 AM to 5 PM, Monday through Friday (except holidays).
