Picnic by Design: Re-imaging Purpose and Function

FXCollaborative
We are one of twenty-two leading architecture and design firms that created and donated a themed picnic basket to Picnic by Design, a fundraising event for the Design Industries Foundation Fighting AIDS (DIFFA). Picnic by Design is one of DIFFA's annual signature events that celebrates creative expression while raising funds and engaging designers in the organization's mission. The event brings together designers, manufacturers and artists whose one-of-a-kind designer picnic baskets are bid on by DIFFA supporters. Funds raised by Picnic for Design supports the organization's grant making efforts to help nonprofit organizations across the country combating HIV/AIDS.

Our basket, Opposing Assimilation, embraces the multicultural, generational, historical, and contemporary contrasts of New York City. By re-imagining purpose and function, where traditional meets modern and cultures collide, something new emerges to reveal the power of design. Packed with luxurious essentials for a foodie and modern traveler's picnic, such as Prosecco, handcrafted chocolate, peppermint fortune cookies, and The Wayfarer's Handbook, our basket raised $200 towards DIFFA's grant making efforts.

We'd like to extend a special thank you to our colleagues Spinneybeck, FilzFelt, and Momentum Textiles for providing such inspiring materials for our basket design.

DIFFA raises awareness and grants funds to organizations that fight HIV/AIDS by providing treatment and direct care services for people living with or impacted by the disease, offering preventative education programs targeted to populations at risk of infection, or supporting public policy initiatives. DIFFA is one of the largest funders of HIV/AIDS service and education programs in the United States, mobilizing the immense resources and creativity of the design community.
