Grand Circle Travelogue, a Pop-Up Show featuring photographs by Partner John Schuyler will be on view in the FXFOWLE Gallery from July 3–28, 2017. The images, whether panoramas or detail studies, share two themes: (1) an interest in exploring a landscape (2) a curiosity about what one can do with an iPhone camera.
The photographs were taken during John's trip to several
U.S. National Parks and
Navajo Nation Parks in Utah and Arizona in fall 2016. The collection of parks is known as the
Grand Circle–first promoted, branded and made accessible by the railroad companies in the late 1800's to entice travelers to discover the largely untouched immense natural beauty of this ancient landscape.

Looking at the landscape, John navigates his way through a place both intellectually and emotionally. To him, each panorama is a small journey; sensing and discovering as he goes along–while the detail studies are more like pauses.
The beauty of the raw land–the vistas, textures, colors and shapes–reveal themselves, yet other discoveries are also made.
Pancho, taken while on horseback using the panorama format, began as a conventional view of the horizon but a jostle caused the camera to rapidly shift down towards the horse–shearing and merging the two conditions. This "happy accident" led John to further explore this type of technique in several additional photographs.
All
Grand Circle Travelogue photographs were taken with an iPhone 6 using available light, with no post-processing. The photographs explore what one can do with the iPhone's basic camera formats (i.e. standard, square and panorama) and internal filters (i.e. black and white).
