BI-COASTAL: Photographs by Alan Chimacoff will be on display in the FXFOWLE Gallery from May 12 – July 15, 2016. Weaving together two series of architectural photography, BI-COASTAL alternates between striking black-and-white images of New York and quirky color images of Los Angeles.

LA
In photography, human activity virtually always consumes the focus of an image, but what happens when the built environment is the foreground? Chimacoff's photography imagines the city as a stage set and backdrop for city life, and depicts that stage set—the objects, buildings, spaces, and oddities—without the distraction of "the passing scene" of human activity. His works show that which was created by and for people, without showing any people themselves. Yet Chimacoff's photographs reveal that the absence of people does not translate into an absence of humanity. Instead, the works capture the unique character and essence of each city, offering aspects of discovery and surprise and an emphasis on size, scale, and complexity. In BI-COASTAL, NY:DensCity showcases the dizzying verticals, grids, and stark contrasts of New York City, while LA:SparsCity highlights the hybridity of styles, textures, and gradients in Los Angeles.

Chimacoff is a professional architect, photographer, and former professor of architecture at Princeton University. He has worked, exhibited, and lectured throughout the United States. His photography is characterized by an emphasis on the physical world, seeking abstraction in representations of reality. For more information, visit www.chimacoff.com.

An opening reception for BI-COASTAL: Photographs by Alan Chimacoff will be held on Thursday, May 12, from 6-8 PM. Anthony Vidler, Professor of Architecture at The Cooper Union will lead a discussion on "The Architecture of Photography" at 7 PM.
