Night at The Museum

The National Academy Museum & School opened its doors after hours on March 20th to a small but energetic group for B-Side's March Design Madness sketch crawl. We were joined by colleagues from the National Academy School and other architecture offices to try our hands at drawing the Constructed Aurora installation of our recent exhibit, REVEALing Architecture, and other spaces and sculptures exhibited at the museum

In addition to REVEALing Architecture, SELF: Portraits of Artists in Their Absence is also on exhibit at The National Academy, which gave us an exciting range of objects to sketch. Upon arrival, we immediately headed up to the Curatorial Lab where our exhibit is on display. There we set up shop and paced around the exhibit to find the perfect angle to sketch.

Navigating the contours of Constructed Aurora proved to be no easy feat. But after a few warm-up sketches, the group caught its stride. Each sketch emphasized a unique line weight and shade. Others complemented their array of Constructed Aurora lines with the organic curves of the Saarinen designed Knoll womb chair and side table. From a certain vantage point, the chair and side table was either beside or behind the installation, creating an interesting layered sketch.

From there, we explored other galleries in The National Academy , sketching and enjoying the museum's many rooms and works of art. It was great sharing drawings with friends outside of the office. Everyone seemed to take a different approach to drawing, from meticulous to loose to comical.

All in all the evening sketch crawl at The National Academy was a great success. Enjoy more drawings below and be sure to check back for B-Sides next sketch crawl. Tweet or Facebook some of your sketches and share where you think we should sketch next! And don't forget to check out our exhibit, REVEALing Architecture, on exhibit at The National Academy Museum & School until May 3rd, 2015. #REVEALingArchitecture
