Marching Into History

FXFOWLE staff participating in People's Climate March on Sunday, September 21st, 2014.
This week world leaders are gathering in New York City for a historic summit on climate change at United Nations Headquarters. According to the UN, "Climate Summit 2014 provides a unique opportunity for leaders to champion an ambitious vision, anchored in action that will enable a meaningful global agreement in 2015." The summit captured nationwide attention with the support of People's Climate March, a monumental mobilization of public outreach for climate change, held this past Sunday. Envisioning smart-sustainable cities is imbedded within FXFOWLE's core values, so we naturally participated in the call for climate action and joined the "movement of movements" as a Partner Organization. In fact, a group of staff took part in the assembly that marked the largest march ever on climate change - spanning Central Park West down to 34th street.

The word "large" does not even begin to describe the turnout at the march. I was not only astounded by the amount of people present, but at the diversity of the participants. As architects and designers, we recognize every day the important part we play in building sustainable environments. The groups that participated in Sunday's march came from all backgrounds and perspectives – scientists, faith organizations, students, and community groups. The list of supporting organizations is as long as it is varied. The participation of 310,000 people really embodied the walk's battle cry: "To change everything, we need everyone."

A moment of silence.
The People's Climate March has demonstrated that people are demanding change. Together, we can create a world with an economy that works for people and the planet.
