Commuting to Sketch

Carol Hsiung
Many people complain about their commute to work, but I don't because it gives me time to sketch. Sketching helps me to pass the time, relax, observe, record, discover stories, and sometimes meet interesting people.

I sketch whatever I can see from my seat.

My sketches capture vignettes in between train seats.

Sometimes, waiting to transfer in Newark becomes a game in which I try to capture as much of my surroundings as possible.

Sketching can also facilitate conversation and the randomness of where I end up sitting often allows for unpredictable surprises. One day, in the Amtrak cafe train, I met and sketched a man who enjoys photographing manhole covers from around the world. Another time, I sat in the middle of a very loud group of women who infected me with their laughter so much that by the end of the trip I felt as though I had known them for years.

Trains are full of stories, and sketching is a way to interpret the stories of the people around me.

I sketch to keep myself awake.
